Bebington High Sports College have recently been given an insight into the Fire Brigade and the services they provide.
Des McDonald from Birkenhead Fire Station will spend one day a week linked to the school, with the aim of engaging with the students to explain issues as wide ranging as fire safety at home, driving safely and water awareness.
Mr McDonald who has been a fireman for 18 years will also try to link fire service activities and practices into school subjects such as explaining about backdrafts, hazardous materials and the triangle of combustion, within Science and basic calculations relating to air consumption and safe working times in buildings during Maths lessons.
This week year 10 science classes have listened to Mr McDonald talk about waterways rescue from rivers, docks and canals and how they should call 999, rather than enter the water themselves.
One of the students Gerrard Ryan also got the chance to try on the clothing and equipment that the fire services have to wear before entering the water.
The lesson was an interesting insight for the students who thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the experience. This is the start of an exciting initiative and the school are extremely proud to be hosting the programme.
