World Book Day 2010 was a great success as students from BHSC were whisked into the world of storytelling, from dressing up as favourite book characters to taking part in reading groups and author events. World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland. Both students and staff at Bebington High Sports College enjoyed a full literacy festival during the week, starting with a visit to the school by local Poet, Author and stand up comedian, John Hughes who enthralled students with his spooky tales and amusing, lively poems. John who also works and gives regular readings at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool spoke about the process of writing, captivating his audience and bringing the books to life. The appreciative young audience were in fits of laughter as they interactively took part in his style of humorous writing.
Literacy Co-ordinator Louise Vickers stated “World Book Day raises the profile of reading and literacy in general, which is close to my heart, I enjoy being around the students talking about authors, sharing the excitement of books and reading”.
Year 8 and 9 students were given the opportunity to meet the outstanding professional, broaden their appreciation of a variety of literature during the week and devoting extra time to reading to mark World Book Day.
tudents began the day with an exhilarating and gripping introduction to writing life.
Humorous tales involving weird and wonderful lands and mythical creatures fascinated the students, leaving them with memories to pass on to others.
A Year 9 student commented, “John was really funny, he told us how to create an interesting attention grabbing first sentence to a story or poem and how to set the scene”.
