Over 100 Boys from different schools recently took part in Machismo 2, at Pacific Road Theatre in Birkenhead, which is a regular event celebrating boys’ dance as opposed to the usual girls or mixed dance performances.
So, on Wednesday 17th March 6 boys from Bebington High Sports College boarded the mini bus bound for Pacific Road Theatre, Birkenhead with their dance teacher Miss Reynalds and were all set for a busy day of dance.
From the minute they arrived at 9.30am the boys were thrown into learning a dance routine based on being able to break away from the crowd and be individual.
The students created powerful performance pieces using breakdance to explore issues that affect them in a physical and positive way and realise that dance is a great way to keep fit & healthy.
The Dance performance was an exciting opportunity for the male students to break down some of the negative stereotypical issues there are about dance and acknowledge the pressure that young men are under to be macho, whether it be peer pressure to drink alcohol or maybe even to have the perfect body.
With Youth Theatre worker John Jones, a regular visitor to Bebington High, in the lead, the boys were kept busy all day. Working with boys from other schools and colleges across Wirral they soon began to get to know some new people.
The hard work, energy and commitment from Tom Edwards, Daniel Smith (both year 12), Stephen Hudson (year 10), William Major, Ellis Doughty, and Dominic Bassnett (all year 7), was fantastic to watch and the boys proved a real credit to Bebington High with their impeccable behaviour and effort.
Tensions were high as the audience began to arrive at 6.30pm and the theatre quickly filled up.
The performance went without a hitch and the Bebington High Boys performed brilliantly. comments from the audience after the show were extremely complimentary and Bebington High was very proud of their budding stars.
